WIM: Weigh in Motion

The CATT Lab’s Weigh in Motion (WIM) tool allows agencies to remotely monitor WIM stations and receive instantaneously alerts for gross weight, axle weight, bridge/tandem weight and over-height violations, with direct violation printing, and an array of analytics and reporting. As each vehicle passes a WIM station, a photograph and weigh-in-motion information is transmitted to the WIM tool in real time. Vehicles with potential over-height violations are tagged with a gold label, other violations with a red label, while those without potential violations are presented with a white label. Law enforcement personnel are able to utilize the tool on a tablet or mobile computer downstream of the weigh in motion station, allowing them safely and efficiently spot potential violations in the field and take appropriate enforcement action, if necessary.
This tool can be easily expanded to include real-time or historical WIM data from other states.
The WIM applications report on a number of violation metrics and alert the user as vehicles passing over the weigh station exhibit these violations:
Images of each vehicle violating the weigh station requirements are taken and transmitted to the apps, allowing a police officer sitting downstream of an weigh station to recognize and pull over offenders.
The analytics application allows for the representation of archived violations to be displayed using several “classic” data visualization techniques as well as some more novel ideas.
WIM data and tools are available independently or integrated through the RITIS platform.
