On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse swept across the U.S., pulling millions into the path of totality from Texas to Maine. The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) harnessed RITIS Probe Data Analytics (PDA) to monitor real-time congestion, tracking INRIX probe speed data on routes like I-89 and I-91 as up to 160,000 visitors flooded the state. PDA dashboards revealed bottlenecks—like post-totality gridlock near Waterbury’s Exit 10—enabling VTrans to adapt traffic management on the fly. Texas DOT used PDA to watch highways like I-35 in Texas slow to a crawl for more than 6 hours.
